What are carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates are indispensable for your body and brain. About 40% to 70% of the daily energy intake consists of carbohydrates. They are in almost every food product, with the exception of fats, oils, meat, fish, and eggs. Carbohydrates provide us with immediate energy, so your vital functions can be maintained. Although carbohydrates are often labelled as 'unhealthy', this is not the case. A prolonged deficiency in carbohydrates can cause problems in the metabolism. The Glycaemic Index estimates how fast the blood sugar level rises after eating carbohydrates. Slow carbohydrates release the energy slowly because they are full of fibres. This is why they have an average to low Glycaemic Index.
Nevertheless, most of the carbohydrates are eaten in the form of sugar. These are the products that make you gain weight, such as biscuits, cake, candy, desserts, sweet spreads, and soft drinks. Additionally, there are the white flour products that include white bread, white rice, and white pasta. You can eat these things occasionally, but wholemeal products are always preferable in a healthy lifestyle. These fast carbohydrates release their energy fast, but they also cause a quick dip in the energy again. You feel satisfied for a short time, but you will feel hungry again soon after. This can give you a feeling of fatigue or drowsiness and you may find it hard to concentrate. This is why they are called fast carbohydrates. Fast carbohydrates have a high Glycaemic Index.
