Emotions often come unexpectedly: still, they are essential. The word 'emotion' has been given many meanings, varying from very pragmatic to spiritual. What matters most is that a definition is meaningful. An emotion is often described as a reaction of the body to the thoughts that go round in your mind.
Emotions have a large impact on your health and balance. Emotions actually work like a chain reaction: a negative emotion is a negative reaction to negative thoughts, just like a positive emotion being a positive reaction to positive thoughts. This would mean that emotions are mainly caused by thoughts and not by situations. This may be hard to imagine, as you always assume that your mood and emotions are primarily determined by your environment. Naturally, this is easier when things are going well and it will be more difficult when life is tough.
Pessimist and optimist
You have no influence on many things that happen to you. Luckily, you have can influence on your own thoughts. When you can steer your thoughts about a situation in a positive direction, then this will also invoke a positive emotion. Some people find this easier to do than others. An optimist is positive, also about the future. A pessimist is negative and mainly focuses on the downside of a positive event. Such a person will worry constantly about bad things that may not even happen. It has been proven that optimists are less affected by stress and experience more happiness.
